What is a ASbA??

What are ASbAs?

Australian School-based Apprenticeships (ASbAs) are a great option if you want to kick start your career by combining work with school studies. ASbAs allow you earn a training wage while working part-time, receive vocational training (eg. TAFE training) and have this work count towards your school studies. An ASbA can assist you to keep your options open, explore a career pathway while still at school and gain a head start on the competition for employment when you leave school.
ASBAs are a great applied learning option for VCE or VCAL students in Years 11 and 12, and in some cases available to Year 10 students also. ASbAs are becoming very popular with students and employers and there are over 16,000 students across Australia currently completing an ASBA.

What’s in it for me?

• Get paid while working. School-based Apprentices receive a National Training Wage for time spent in the workplace (you don’t receive payment for time spent in off-the-job training).
• Get a vocational qualification. School-based Apprentices receive industry training through a TAFE or other training provider and upon completion receive a Certificate recognised by employers. Once complete, you might be able to use all or part of your Certificate to gain credits into future studies or a full-time apprenticeship or traineeship.
• Get your senior school certificate. School-based Apprentices continue to attend school and work towards completing their VCE or VCAL studies. In some cases ASBA training may contribute to a VCE ENTER score.
• Get real workplace experience. School-based Apprentices are employees of a business, and get loads of hands-on workplace experience that is useful for future employment or studies.
• Get future employment. Once the ASBA is completed School-based Apprentices may be offered ongoing work with their employer, or may use their skills and knowledge to find another job.
What do I have to do?

As an Australian School-based Apprentice or Trainee, you are required to:

• Be at least 15 years of age
• Be job ready - have a current resume, have prepared for an interview, and show knowledge and interest in your chosen industry area
• Be able to work 8 -15 hours per week
• Undertake the training that you and your employer have agreed to
• Attend school and work towards completing your VCE or VCAL studies
• Follow your employer’s instructions and adhere to company policies and procedures
• Attend work at the agreed times
• Be responsible for managing your training requirements and keeping a record of learning
