The aims of the VET Children’s Services program are to provide year 11 and 12 candidates with a 2 year program that is industry recognised training in the field of children’s services.

(Wednesday 9.00-3.30pm)

Duration

2 years.

Work Placement

1st year: 80 hours / 10 days throughout the year. 5 days during Term 2 school holidays, 5 days for the first five Wed of Term 3
2nd year: 40 hours 5 days for the first five Wednesdays of Term 3

Sample Program Outline

  • Identify and respond to children and young people at risk
  • Ensure the health and safety of children
  • Provide care for children
  • Contribute to provision of nutritionally balanced food in a safe and hygienic manner
  • Work within a legal and ethical framework
  • Support the development of children
  • Interact effectively with children
  • Provide experiences to support children’s play and learning
  • Develop understanding of children’s interests and developmental needs
  • Apply first aid
  • Contribute to OHS processes
  • Provide care for babies (mandatory in Victoria for staff employed in licensed children’s services centres)
  • Support the behavior of children and young people
  • Participate effectively in the work environment
  • Work effectively with families to care for child

Materials

You will be required to dress appropriately for your work placement i.e. neat casual clothing
Required work books are built into course fees. Basic stationery is required for written components

Working With Children Check for the Certificate III in Children’s Services

It is a requirement when working or volunteering in Certificate III in Children’s Services to hold a current Working with Children card. If commencing in Certificate III in Children’s Services, this card must be applied for immediately, as it can take several months for your application to be processed. You may not be able to commence your work placement if you do not have a current WWC card. Your application needs to be lodged at Australia Post with the required identification.

Contribution

VCAL counts towards Industry Related Skills strand.
VCE Program 1 (1st Year): On successful completion of this program, students are eligible for recognition for three VCE VET units at 1–4 level.
