What are ASbA’s?

What are ASbA’s?

Australian School-based Apprenticeships/Traineeships (ASbAs) allow students over 15 years of age to work as paid part-time apprentices or trainees while still at school. ASbA’s enable young people to gain a vocational qualification and genuine workplace experience while also completing their school studies.

ASbA’s resemble full-time apprenticeships and traineeships, but are conducted part-time by an enrolled secondary student. ASbA’s are a great applied learning option for VCE or VCAL students in Years 11 and 12 and in some cases also available to Year 10 students. ASbA’s prepare students for the world of work and assist employers to attract young employees into their business.

What are the features of an ASbA?

  • Attendance at school, TAFE (on and off the job) and work
  • A training contract, which links to an industrial award or agreement, signed by the employer and the person in training
  • Attainment of a senior secondary certificate and a vocational and technical qualification
  • Paid wages for the period of time in the workplace.

ASbA’s – Where do they lead to for Young People?

School-based apprenticeships and traineeships open up more than just an alternative learning opportunity for young people. They embrace all of the skills and attributes that enable students to progress to whatever their career goals and study goals are – whether to university, TAFE, apprenticeships or directly into the workforce.

Benefits of an ASbA’s for young people:

  • Assist in developing self confidence, individualise and tailor study programs and enable all students to demonstrate levels of success and achievement
  • Compliment the VCAL study by enhancing workplace skills and industry based experience
  • Enable students to undertake Nationally Accredited Training at Certificate II or III level
  • Assist in gaining entry into further study as an apprentice or trainee at a higher level or to continue study to lead to multiple further study options (TAFE and Uni) – Cert IV, Diploma, Bachelor degrees
  • Complement VCE and possibly add to young people’s ENTER score Assist in developing invaluable work skills and ethics that will help when applying for employment or work experience placements (such as through TAFE and uni course)
