Just The Fit
James attended a local catholic college where an inclination to work with his hands was recognised. James decided to combine his year 10 school studies with TAFE training and participated in an introductive engineering program put together by a local TAFE in consultation with Youth Connect. The TAFE environment was conducive to his practical learning aptitude and inspired James to continue with a VE&T Engineering certificate in years 11 and 12.
As part of both programs James had the opportunity to experience a real work place setting through work placements coordinated and supported by Youth Connect. James’ confidence and interest in engineering continued to develop and he began to seek opportunities beyond school.
After completing year 12 last year, James registered with the Work This Way *program where another period of work experience was set up with a local engineering company, AG Grinding & Tooling. This allowed the employer to trial a potential apprentice in their workplace while also allowing James to further develop his employability skills.
As a result of James’ training and enthusiasm, upon completion of this work placement AG Grinding & Tooling offered James a Fitting and Turning Apprenticeship. James is now is completing the first year of his apprenticeship.
